Cleaning Celestite Clusters

We obtained some beautiful Celestite geode clusters for I Dig Crystals. These are all one-of-kind angelic blue crystals sparkling in rocky geode bowls. The rocky matrix is crumbly but the crystals are solid, so we tried to wash out as much of the sandy debris as possible and let them shine in the sun to dry before listing!

Sunshine for your Crystals

Question: The sun came out Sheila so I left the crystals in my window. Is there supposed to be a set time they need to be exposed to the sun for? How do I know if they got enough sun? I'm sorry, these questions must sound so silly to you lol..I just want to do it right. Thanks!

Answer:  Hi, don't worry, you can send me as many crystal healing related questions as you wish. That's what I am here for! 


When I obtain a new crystal I like to charge it in the sunlight (or moonlight) for at least one day's cycle. After that, it can remain in the sun (if the crystal is not susceptible to fading), in a sunny window or kept completely out of the sun. Sun energy is especially useful for the crystals you want to program with powerful physical healing energy (as opposed to intuitive emotional healing in the Moonlight). Cleaning Crystals in Water

Question: Hi, sorry for the bother but I watched a few of your lovely videos this a.m. and in one of them you said some gemstones cannot be submerged in water and to contact you and ask if we didn't know. I'm so sorry, I googled it and can't find it.

Can Prehnite be cleansed by submerging in water overnight? That's my most important question as I acquired some but haven't been able to work with it because I didn't know how to cleanse it. If not can it be washed in tap water with natural soap?

My other question is Rose Quartz: right now I have a batch of rose quartz in a glass container with spring water and sea salt soaking for several hours. Is it ok?

Answer:  Hi, thank you for your email and for watching our crystal healing video tutorials.

If your Prehnite stones are tumbled smooth they will be okay in water. However, if they are raw formations, you may want to cleanse them using another method like dry brown rice, dry sea salt, incense, etc. When in doubt, we like to leave crystals out of water.

Rose Quartz, along with others in the Quartz family, will do fine in water. Again, if there are any delicate points, occlusions or formations on the stones, you will want to be cautious and leave them out of water.

Running them under tap water or a natural stream of water will be sufficient. You do not need soap. If there is something physically dirty on the stones, you may want to rub them with some natural soap, but again be aware of the fragility of the stone.

Using & Caring for Selenite

Selenite to Seal the Aura

Question: Sheila - I hope you don't mind a question on a crystal I recently bought. I found your site while doing online research. I recently when to Colorado on vacation and visited Glenwood Caverns in Glenwood Springs,Co. They had a gift shop that had all sorts of rocks and crystals. I ended up buying a huge Selenite Crystal that was in a tower form and had a regular light in the bottom of it.

It must be at least 12 to 14 inch tall and 4 to 6 inch think. It is really big and heavy. (15lbs or more) My question is that I would like to use it for programming and to assist in healing. Do I use it in the same manner as the wands that you talk about in your videos? I am just not sure how I would go about using it since I really can't easily "hold it to the various chakras".

I probably will go ahead and get a selenite wand from you as well, so I have a wand, but would be interested in your response. I also read that Selenite is the only crystal that can program quartz...is that correct?

I appreciate any assistance you might be able to give.

Answer: Hi, thank you for your email. To use your large Selenite stone for healing, you can clean, charge and program it the same way as other stones. Please keep in mind that Selenite will dissolve in water and in general is very fragile. As for healing, it will be hard to wield the cluster easily over yourself or others, so in this case we suggest you place your hands over it for meditation or to seal the aura. A wand will make it easier for portable crystal healing. For the cluster you can do visualizations instead of active healing over the chakras.

We have not heard that Selenite is the only crystal to program quartz. In fact, the term programming as we use it refers to your intentions focusing the energy of the crystal. In this way you can program all of your stones according to whichever energy you are seeking from it at the particular time.

Removing Radiation from Crystals

Question: Hi do you know how to remove radiation from crystals that already absorb by it?

Answer: Hi, thank you for writing in. Depending on how much radiation your crystal has absorbed, I would leave it in salt water (if it is not water soluble), dry sea salt or buried in dirt for a relative amount of time. If you feel like the crystal is not cleaned of this energy after some time in these crystal cleaning methods, i would let it rest. Do not use it for healing, just bury it back into the earth, either in your potted plants or garden.

CRYSTALS: Dissolved Selenite

QUESTION: i was unaware that selenite should not be cleaned in water and haveleft my large selenite ball over night in water and salt . Now it has lost its shine all together and has become rough and chalk to touch. The local crystal lady has told me to leave it in the sun , which i am now doing. Can you give me any suggestions to recover the shine of the crystal ???

ANSWER: Hi, thank you for your email. Yes, Selenite and other soft stones will dissolve in water. We always prefer the dry brown rice or sage methods of cleaning, especially if you are unsure. At this point, the Selenite will not regain its shine unless you take it back to a professional stone polisher. You may want to check your local gemological association or any gem fairs or rock shops in your area for this service.

QUESTION: Does desert rose selenite charge and clean crystals like the regular selenite?


ANSWER: Hi, good question. Yes, Desert Rose Selenite will charge crystals as well. However, it may be in a form which is not as easy to use compared to a big Selenite log which can easily be used as a base for your crystals to be placed or Selenite wands and polished Selenite which can easily be scanned over your crystals to be cleaned.

ANSWER: HI, thanks for your question, yes, you can treat Amber like you would your crystal bracelets. I would avoid water when cleaning jewelry as the cords will wear down more quickly in water. I would use another method that is not hard on the cord or findings like dry brown rice, sage or placing it on a large crystal cluster.

CRYSTALS: Care

QUESTION: Hi, i am new to crystals i currently own a Rose Quartz and Amethest i wear them on a chain together, i was wondering how to clean and charge or program them.

ANSWER: Thanks for your question.

I would suggest cleaning and charging your pendants on a large cluster. clusters with more points are best as they are constantly circulating focused energy through the tips. This will effectively clean and charge your stones, especially if the cluster is kept in the sunlight. I have large Quartz clusters I like to use, but you can use any cluster you have available. If you do not own any clusters, you can also use dry brown rice, another one of my favorite cleaning methods. You will want to place these also in the sunlight to charge.

You can also simply run them under tap water, but again, if they with metals or on a chain, this may tarnish the metal. So, for jewelry you should stay away from water when you are unsure of the outcome.

Dry sea salt is another popular cleaning method, but for polished stones this could lead to scratches, depending on the hardness of the crystal.

CRYSTALS: Labradorite

QUESTION: Sheila, One question for you -what's the best way to clean my labradorite? Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: The best way to clean Labradorite is to place it on a large Quartz cluster. The points of the cluster help to circulate and energize the cleaning properties of Quartz to any of the stones you place on top of it. If you do not have a large Quartz cluster, I like to use dry brown rice. Try to avoid water method if you are talking about Labradorite jewelry because this will wear down the string or tarnish the wire.

Crystals: Throat #2

QUESTION: Dear Sheila, I'm very impressed of your comments, you are very smart and intelligent girl. I salute to your efforts.

Actually, my mom had a sore & hoarse throat before due to intake of very hot ginger tea. After that her throat got very sore and hoarse, and dry, then she started to do herbal remedies. Then her soreness and hoarseness were gone, but she did mistake, she gargled with salt water, it made her throat more worse, it made her throat, tongue and lips more dry, she became anxious, so her heart started beating fast and her blood pressure became low.

We called emergency at 12:00 mid-night, she spent all night in the emergency, doctor checked her throat and she had a throat culture. Her family doctor found that it is a bacteria, she has white spots in her throat, she took antibiotics, she got better than before, but now she has too much thirst for drinking water, she still feels that her lips, tongue and throat is dry. She cannot eat raw carrot, spicy food, and she doesn't take tea.

I was praying for her a lot and my family too, she is praying too. I was very worried, and looking for best youtube program for dry throat, so suddenly, I found your you tube, it was very exited and made me feel happy, you looked very kind and helpful. Believe me when I saw your email, I thought that a friend of mine sent me an email because you are very friendly and helpful, God bless you amen.

ANSWER: Once you have obtained your Quartz wand, you will want to clean, charge and program it. You can choose a variety of methods of cleaning and charging - whatever you have available to you - you only have to choose one method of the many options - http://www.idigcrystals.com/care.htm

After you have cleaned and charged the stone, you want to program it in a positive manner to heal your mother's throat. A statement you could use would be "Thank you for opening up my mother's throat chakra energies" - but use your own words that make you comfortable saying! Then you will want to point the tip of the Quartz a few inches above her throat. Use your giving hand (right hand if you are right handed) and rotate it in a clockwise circle for a few minutes.

Make sure she is feeling relaxed, breathing comfortably and have her imagine all of her throat energies free and feeling healthy. Make sure she states exactly how she WANTS her throat to feel - don't say words like dry or raw or anything that she does NOT want her throat to feel! You can even have her imagine that she is shooting away the throat bacteria like we do with cancer patients, having them imagine themselves shoot away the cancer cells.

As you are working on her, make sure that you are not being emotional or giving her any of your fears, doubts or worries. That's why it's always best to have an unbiased healer working on someone. However, if you have he right state of mind, and a certain detachment, you could do it also! Make sure you have some protective stones on you (wearing or holding) when you are working on others so you YOU don't absorb the negativity coming out of your mother's energies. We use Obsidian for protection.

As for the blue stones, you can place these on her throat or near her bedside so that she can have this positive energy on her when you are not working on her energetically. Again, you will want to clean, charge and program them. It's best if she can do the programming herself if she will be lying with these stones.

If you have any other questions, please do ask. Meanwhile, make sure that you are relaxing and accepting the situation. Only when we accept the situation can we move on to hope and a cure.

Remember, healing is never an instantaneous process, so take the time and trust in the universe to take its course.

CRYSTALS: Cluster Cleaning

QUESTION: Hi, I received my cluster and it is just beautiful. I am just learning and starting to use crystals, Your website is very helpful, but I would like to clarify do I need to clean and charge and program my cluster? I know you discuss this for crystals. So is this needed with my Arilbite cluster with apophyllite? Please advise. Thanks

ANSWER: Thank you for your question. Clusters are actually self-cleaning as they are constantly circulating positive energy through all of the crystal points, working harmoniously from the common base. We can clean other crystals by placing them on clusters.

However, I do clean my clusters from time to time to remove it of dust. In this case I usually run it under water and leave it to air dry.

Leaving clusters in the windowsill to charge in the sunlight and/or moonlight is also beneficial to keep the crystal's charge.

And, yes, definitely program your cluster if you want it to do something specific!

CRYSTALS: Brown Rice

QUESTION: Dear Sheila- I have never heard of using Brown rice to cleanse a crystal. How does it work? What is the theory behind it? I've know of running water and salt water, but the brown rice is a new idea to me and I like the idea, but again what is the basis behind it. I enjoy your site and have recommended it to my friends.

ANSWER: Hi, thanks for your email. I personally prefer to use brown rice because it is readily available and easy to use and to store. As for the theory behind it, I don't know where it came from, but my guess is that it has something to do with the fiber coating that white rice does not have. I am not sure about the theory of salt water either other than its connection to the sea, so brown rice may be a connection to the earth. In a sense it would make sense as I am an Earth person and don't prefer the sea. Pure speculation, but may be reality!

I suggest you experiment with the different methods of cleaning crystals (salt water, sage, tap water, brown rice, sea salt, clusters, etc) to find the method that you prefer. You can also watch the video I have on cleaning crystals at: http://satincrystals.ning.com/
