Picturing Agate Crystals

Agate is such a common stone, yet comes in hundreds of mesmerizing colors, patterns and varieties. Pictured  is a tiny area from a large piece of a wonderfully-named American Flame-tail Rooster Agate. The brilliant-red 'vegetation' is the source of its generic name, moss agate, and is formed by crystalline growths of impurities such as iron oxide. Size: 3cm.

CRYSTALS:Dendritic Chalcedony

QUESTION: Hey there! Do you have some of this stone in your store? I would like to get some.
I just got a blue chalcedony necklace from a friend, so I looked the stone/crystal up and the dendritic one would be greatfor my friend. Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi, thanks for your question. Yes, we do have dendritic Chalcedony at the store. Only a few slabs left at this time. This is a beautiful and wondrous stone with its plant-like inclusions! It is often erroneously called "Plume Agate", "Dendritic Jasper" or other such names, but in reality Chalcedony is the umbrella term for all these stones.

Chalcedony: When it is concentrically banded (often in rather wild patterns) it is called by the subvariety name Agate. When it is in flat layers/bands it is called by the subvariety name Onyx. [Note: Many non-banded forms of chalcedony - such as Moss agate - are often erroneously called 'agates'. True agate is concentrically banded. Mottled and included chalcedonies are more properly called simply 'chalcedony.' Petrified wood (agatized wood) is the name given to fossil wood where the replacement of the wood is by chalcedony, but the banding in this case is due to the wood structure - not concentric deposition of the chalcedony - and the material is chalcedony, not true agate.] - from www.mindat.org
