CRYSTALS: Carat

QUESTION: Hi Lisa and Sheila--Help. I don't quite understand the difference in size between something that's 1.9 grams and something thats14.6 carats just as an example. Can you explain the difference or relationship in size? I would forever be indebted to you.

ANSWER: Hi, a carat is just a term of measurement, just like grams, just a different unit of measurement like meters and feet. It is typically used for measuring precious gemstones and pearls. Comes from ancient times when they used grains of wheat and carab seeds to bring unity to the gemstone trade and its measurements.

1 carat = 0.2 grams.

This CARAT is different from the Karat used to tell you how much gold is in Gold.

Sheila :)
